Avoiding Corporate Apparel Disasters

We all know how crucial it is to brand your company and a part of that branding is in the corporate clothing that your team will wear. As important as it is to get the branding for your company with corporate apparel it is also very easy for your company to become a laughing stock if you get it wrong.

When we think of corporate clothing, we tend to imagine a sleek uniform that screams professionalism and efficiency, but to get this look in reality takes a bit more effort than just buying a snazzy outfit for everyone. Whether you are buying corporate apparel or safety clothing here are 5 ways to avoid your workwear putting the cringe in cringe factor.

1 – Do not have a one size fits all approach to your workwear.
One of the biggest mistakes that we often see with a company's choice of corporate apparel is to assume that just because something looks good on one employee that it will automatically do the same for all employees.

Instead of ordering a standard size skirt or trouser be prepared to adjust your ideas of your uniform to match the individual – no-one will notice the difference if one skirt is slightly shorter than another, if a neckline is different or if the trousers are all different cuts but they will quickly notice if the corporate clothing is unflattering to an employee.

2 – Make Cleaning Easy
Nothing says unorganized and cheap like corporate apparel that is crumpled, dishevelled or in a state of disrepair. You want your employees to take care of their workwear so you have to choose corporate clothing that will help them to do this.

Make sure that as much as possible is able to be put through the washing machine and tumble drier and that it needs as little ironing as possible. If you choose a uniform that needs drycleaning, include a service that will pick up and drop off the drycleaning for them. This will remove the extra stress from the employee, while making sure that they always have a uniform that looks great.

3 – Ignore Trends
I know that the mini is always trying to make a comeback, as is the turtleneck and skinny jeans, but save these latest trends for the out of hours wardrobe. It is important that you choose good quality classically tailored styles that suit most people and will last through the years rather than having to replace your corporate apparel every season.

4 – Big does not mean bigger
When choosing corporate clothing for the larger employees most employers just get bigger sizes. In reality this tend to make the employee look even bigger and does nothing for their moral. Take special care with the choice of workwear for the larger employees and go with more fitting garments in plain colors which will flatter them and accentuate the positive physical attributes that they have.

5 – Forget Fridays
You know how in the past a trend was started for a 'casual Friday'? Forget it. Clothing and tastes have developed so much since the inception of this 'moral booster' that you can easily end up with a mismatched hotch-potch of workwear that will leave your customers running for the door!

An alternative is to have a 'relaxed Friday, where employees can easily loose the tie and jacket or you could even go one step further and provide them with corporate clothing that is more casual to be worn on Fridays.

How Safety Clothing is Saving Lives

From heavy machinery operators and warehouse staff to cyclists and horse riders there is a gradual acknowledgement about the effectiveness of safety clothing in saving lives.

However, despite the advertising there is still a resistance by predominately older employees to wearing high visibility safety clothing. In some cases it is also the business which is reluctant to spend the money required or to enforce policies which are meant to help to ensure the safety of their staff.

If you are wondering just how high visibility safety clothing can really help have a look at these figures from the NZ Statistics Department.

Did you know that according to Statistics New Zealand in 2009 in New Zealand 48% of all claims to ACC for work related injuries came from the Trades sector, with a little over 30% coming from the operators of plant, factory line and heavy machinery operators closely followed by farm and agricultural workers?

Before you go thinking that these accident rates are attributed to young and inexperienced operators you might like to consider that nearly a quarter of all workplace accidents involved men in the 45-54 age group – that's more than 50,000 claims in one year.

Makes you think doesn't it.

That is 50,000 middle aged men whose lives have been affected by a workplace accident. In 2010 the total amount of people whose lives were affected by a workplace injury was over 187,000.

However the real impact is not just about the 187,000 victims, but also their partners, children and other people who were impacted by the accident. In many of these cases the incident could have been avoided simply by wearing the appropriate safety clothing and high visibility gear.

A couple of excuses that I have heard from workers regarding their high visibility clothing are that they do not work at night and they are visible by daylight so the fluoro high vis gear is not needed.

This is an excuse that is really hard to explain to employees until they see for themselves the difference in visibility between them walking through a yard with and without safety gear on as well as the difference that safety gear can make when they walk through shadows. Most will acknowledge that there is a definite problem when they are in shadow, and many will grudgingly acknowledge that there is an improvement in daylight as well. By wearing their vest at all times they do not have to worry about the times that it is needed.

As a safety conscious employer you are trying to minimize risk as well as making the wearing of safety clothing less restrictive and more natural for your staff.

Just as you would not think twice about putting on a pair of trusty steel capped boots, it should also be second nature to pull on a high visibility vest and hard hat as soon as you leave your vehicle or clock in. By making it second nature to wear safety clothing we can keep our workplace accident rate on it's current decline.

Corporate Apparel Getting the Perfect Fit For Your Business

As much as we would like all our staff to be walking billboards for our businesses, we also know that corporate clothing does not come cheap. In fact in many cases using corporate branding to market your business just stretches the budget too far for many small businesses. But if this is where you are at with your decision making then you might like to consider the potential benefits and financial return that you could get by using corporate apparel and branded safety clothing.

If you are dubious about the impact of corporate clothing on your business then stop and think for a minute. How do you identify a McDonalds restaurant, van, worker or sponsored event? Is it from the small print on the packet or on the side of the vehicle?

No.

Chances are that as soon as you see a red and yellow building, uniform or vehicle that you think of McDonalds – even before your see the trademarked 'Golden Arches'.

Think of the trucking firms that you see on the road – if you see a blue truck and trailer unit, there is a good chance that you will think of Mainfreight, see a red one with a star you will probably think of Linfox. Need I say which team you think of in rugby who dress in all black?

Now while you might think that it is all very well for multi billion dollar corporations. The same can also occur at a local level. The more your customers and suppliers see your brand, your logo and your colours, the less likely customers will be to divert from your services and the more likely your suppliers will be to recommend your business.

Corporate apparel, whether it is branded executive blazers or safety clothing with your logo on it corporate clothing obviously goes a long way to enhancing your brand image right from the very first impression through to long term clients and you're your service staff. But don't forget the psychological impact that branding your corporate apparel has on your staff.

Just as your clients will assume that you are a professional and successful company by your corporate clothing and apparel, so too will this feeling flow through to your staff. Believe it or not this empowers your staff and they can actually become more professional in their attitude and work ethics. Adding to this is the psychology of being part of a team where feeling that they are a valued and essential team member also creates a better work ethos.

Just by creating a brand image with corporate apparel or branded safety clothing you can literally lift your staff morale and boost your returns.

Branding Your Business with Corporate Clothing

Whether you are running a corporate office, a sports team, a fast food restaurant or a day care centre branding is one of the best ways to get noticed. One of the best ways for your branding to become recognized is through your team uniforms and corporate clothing.

Imagine if the staff at McDonalds could wear anything they wanted to work – how keen would you be to have them make your meals? Or what if the staff at Air New Zealand wore whatever they wanted? How secure would you feel?

What about the All Blacks? How would you feel if our World Champions turned up to an international fixture wearing boardies and jandals? Not a good look is it? But worse still, you probably wouldn't recognise half of them when they are out of their black and white uniform or blazers.

Like it or not, corporate apparel gives your clients confidence that you are professional, responsible and can be trusted with their work. It is also a self perpetuating cycle where because your employees feel a part of something special they respond with work that promotes the brand.

While some companies just insist on their teams being dressed in the same corporate apparel, others take their corporate clothing branding to a whole new level by regulating the jewellery, make up and hair styles that employees can wear.

Codes of conduct and acceptable behaviour are now common place in employment contracts as companies are often branded according to the attitude, knowledge and helpfulness of the staff. This also helps to avoid certain individual looks and behaviours which may otherwise detract from the business.

Some have a different type of corporate clothing uniform depending on the level of the employee within the organisation; the key here is to make sure that although the different level between employees is clear the brand is still recognisable, either through the use of colour or logo – or preferably both.

Because health and safety plays such a tremendous part in the workplace one of the best ways of ensuring compliance with this policy is to use corporate clothing which also meets all the safety standards.

For example, an executive in a building firm may have the appropriate work wear for the office, but there should also be appropriate safety clothing available for when the executive needs to go onsite. This could include a hard hat, safety boots, wet weather gear and high visibility jackets, all of which can be branded with your logo and colours.

Vegan Meal Ideas

Thank goodness for globalization and global media. In the past vegan meal ideas consisted of nothing more than eating endless amounts of lettuce and raw vegetables. Do not get me started on how much tofu we were supposed to go through in a week! If you even mentioned that you were a vegan you were dismissed by corporates and vegetarians alike.

Thankfully the world has woken up to the fact that there is a cost to everything that we eat. Whether it is in the pollution which is created and the environmental footprint left behind by factory farming or the cruelty that many factory farmed animals have to go through just so we can get that fresh milk or cheese.

Globalization has also meant that we are now more aware of different cultures and religious sects and our societies are now more diversified meaning that we are more accepting of people whose lifestyles may differ from ours.

When all of this comes together we find that the world as a whole is now starting to recognize veganism as a valid option and lifestyle choice. With that in mind the range of vegan meal ideas has now improved dramatically over the last few years and even those who are not vegans will love these vegan cuisine ideas.

Using an Indonesian ingredient called Tempeh in your meals is a great way to get the texture and taste similar to meat without actually having to eat meat. Traditionally made from cultured and fermented soy it has become so popular so quickly that there are even tempeh products made from oats and barley rather than soy for those conscious of the effects of soy of the body.

One of the great things about using tempeh for vegan meal ideas is that unlike many meat substitutes, it is high in protein and calcium and for vegan meal ideas like vegan bolognaise or Sloppy Joes tempeh holds your defining sauce really well, making it a great substitute.

One of the most simple and cost effective vegan meal ideas id to use chickpeas and lentils in place of meat in your favorite recipe. They make great meals whether you use them in curries, soups or casseroles. They are full of protein, nutrition and flavor and you would be hard pressed to notice the lack of meat in these dishes.

Soba noodles are another crowd favorite when it comes to looking for vegan meal ideas. Originally from Japan, these buckwheat and wheat flour they resemble spaghetti but have a thick texture and slightly nutty taste. Use them by themselves dipped in soy sauce or as the base for a variety of dishes and soups – Yum!

Ever heard of a paella? It is a current favorite with many chefs and restaurants and is usually made with seafood, but guess what? You can easily substitute the seafood with vegetables and have a great tasting vegan paella. For extra oomph you can also drizzle an oil like truffle oil over the top.

Or how about spring rolls with a Thai vegetable twist?

Apart from substituting foods there are plenty of vegan recipes that involve normal foods too – what better excuse to eat chocolate and strawberries or guacamole and chips?

Use your imagination and look for substitutes to favorite recipes and you'll find that your vegan meal ideas will not stop flowing. Have fun!

Easy Vegan Lunch Recipes

Many people think that by becoming a vegan you will miss out on so much tasty food, but the reality is that food does not have to come from an animal to taste great! There are many easy vegan lunch recipes that not only fill the gap at lunchtime, but that will actually make your friends and workmates jealous!

Ok so, the egg and ham sandwich might be out of the question, but what if I were to tell you that you will feel much better, be healthier and also be doing the environment a favor by choosing vegan lunch recipes that use a selection of vegan cuisine ideas?

You can go with the traditional sandwich lunch using substitutes for the fillings or you can change your diet altogether and look at specialist breads, vegetables, soups and dips. In fact because of the popularity of vegetarian and veganism there are vast quantities of pre packaged vegan cuisine dishes available from supermarkets and grocery stores.

For those who love their food but who find vegetables bland and uninteresting there are special mayonaises and vinaigrettes which are completely kosher for vegans and which make any of the many vegan meal ideas spectacular – I bet your non-vegan friends will not even notice that they have not had any animal products during their meal.

But to get you started here are a few easy vegan lunch recipes ideas to get the taste buds energized!

For a start – let's go with the sandwich idea and spruce it up with salad greens, capsicums and tomatoes. Add different types of hummus or balsamic vinegar to spice up the flavor – doesn't that sound far better than stodgy old ham and cheese sandwiches?

Or how about we get rid of the bread and go extra exotic by using wraps to hold our salad greens and chosen flavoring?

If you are a sushi fan then it is perfectly acceptable to use vegan lunch recipes that look like sushi, but which contain substitute vegetable fillings mixed with rice inside a seaweed wrap.

One thing that is always popular for easy vegan lunch recipes is the traditional salad which is based on rice or cous cous. Easy to make, it stores really well, so just make a big bowl full and take it for lunch over the next few days.

Don't forget to include your lentils and grains – one of the best vegan meal ideas is to make a vegetable soup with a lentil base which will not only be delicious, but which will also provide you with those essential complex carbohydrates and proteins that you need for energy. Make a big pot full and warm up a serving for lunch!

With a little planning you can whip up these easy vegan lunch recipes and have your friends and workmates wanting to swap lunches with you!

Managing the Effects of Stress

Stress is such a common part of our lifestyle that there are entire industries that have been designed to manage the effects of stress. Work places now have stress management seminars, school counselors have therapists that specialize in students that are stressed and relationship counseling is very focused on reducing the effects of all types of stress on the home and family.

This is a very important concept to grasp, because if left untreated, the effects of stress can be mildly disturbing at best, but fatal at worst.

This is because each time we experience an increase in our stress levels our body thinks that we are in imminent danger and moves into fight or flight mode. That is, we get ready to run away, or to fight. Our blood moves faster, our muscles tighten up and we get flooded with a whole lot of hormones and nutrients in preparation for a massive physical action.

This is great if we need to take on a mountain lion or run from a herd of buffalo, but because most problematic stress is at an emotional level it is very rare that these physical attributes are required. So we get a massive physical reaction without a corresponding need for all the energy, hormones and nutrients that it created. If used too often, this can lead to relatively minor inflictions like tremors, insomnia, panic attacks, muscle strains digestive issues and sexual dysfunction. If left untreated it can also lead to serious health issues like heart disease, neurological disorders and strokes. There is even the strong suggestion that our susceptibility to cancer also increases as our levels of stress rise.

So this is all very scary, but what can we do about it? Whether you are a parent of young kids, a teenager who has had their first relationship, a factory worker on a minimum wage or a corporate boss in charge of thousands of employees, stress is a natural part of everyone's life. So we need to learn how to minimize it where we can and deal with remaining issues promptly and effectively.

There are three ways to do this;

Recognize it and Talk about it
Whether you talk to your partner, your best friend or a professional counselor, being able to recognize and express what it is that is making you feel stressed is the absolute first starting point. Sometimes you will feel within yourself that something is not right, sometimes you will have a period of sustained ill health, sometimes it will be a caring friend, your partner or a work colleague that will point out that your attitude has changed. These are often the first sign that the effects of stress are starting to take a toll.

The sooner that you acknowledge this and recognize what the real cause is, the sooner you can begin to do something about it.

Take a Time Out
While most of us would love to spend a few months on a tropical island the reality is that we can't – and even if we could it would not change anything, the stressors would still be there when we got back. But what we can do is to take a few minutes each day to spend on ourselves doing exactly what we want.

It might be locking yourself in a room and playing music really loudly, it might be going for a drive through the countryside, some people get massages, do yoga or just blob in front of the TV for an hour. Whatever gets you relaxed and allows your mind to become distracted for a small while will help to relieve the effects of stress on your body.

Get it Sorted
Although some issues are just a natural part of life there are many issues that can be dealt with almost instantly. This can include working long hours, trying to juggle too many things in your life, family issues and financial issues. Often these are far easier to address than you think and the answer might be just to talk to your boss, say 'no' once in a while, talking to the family member or a counselor or getting budgeting advice. By tackling each one as soon as it occurs you will instantly start to relax and feel those physical and emotional effects of stress melt away.

Kindle DX Does Bigger Mean Better

Most of you will be familiar with the Amazon Kindle and all the bells and whistles that come with it, but apart from being bigger, how does the Kindle DX differ from other Kindles and is the extra price tag really justified?

Like all 3rd generation Kindles, the DX employs the e-Ink Pearl technology that make the words on the screen appear as similar as possible to printed paper, making the Kindle DX reading experience as natural as possible. It will not cause strain to your eyes and the lack of glare makes it very easy to read in sunlight. The contrast on the DX is even more advanced than the regular Kindle.

With a screen size of 9.7 inches your Kindle DX is noticeably larger than your regular 6inch Kindle screen. Reading those reports, newspaper articles, analyzing graphs and studying pictures is far easier because you get all the details with nothing cut off. You also get to read the stories and articles in perspective. One user even reported that they loved their DX because the larger screen size didn't truncate lines of poetry. They could now fully comprehend the emotion of the poet and read the poetry in the context that was intended.

Your Kindle DX also comes with 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity for browsing and downloading 'on-the-go'. No more having to stay behind in hotels as you wait for important documents to be sent to you via the hotel Wi-Fi before a big meeting. Simply pack up and download them on the way. You can have entire novels sent in under 60 seconds from virtually anywhere in the world. This 3G connectivity comes as a part of the Kindle DX package and there are no expensive monthly fees or downloaded data charges to pay.

Your Kindle DX can store up to 3,500 books and although no longer need to use the computer to upload books, materials and system upgrades, you do have this option if you wish thanks to full USB compatibility.

One of the biggest advantages of the Kindle is that it has a built in PDF reader, making reading and editing those important documents a breeze. The talk to text feature is also one that sets the Amazon e-readers apart from other brands. It also supports MP3, TXT, Audible, HTML, DOC, JPEG, GIF, PNG, AZW formats among others.
.
As great as the Amazon Kindle DX is, there is one drawback that some users found. At 18.9 ounces it is a little heavier than your regular Kindle, which can make it more difficult for one-handed readers to operate smoothly. Unfortunately this is one of the unavoidable drawbacks to having a bigger device.

When it comes to battery life, without using the wireless capabilities full-time, you will get 2-3 weeks of battery life, compared with 7 days with the wireless connectivity on.

The price of the Kindle DX is something that stands between it and potential purchasers. It is currently priced at around $370 putting it firmly in the realm of the iPad and similar e-readers, but the DX does not have the level of versatility at this stage that the iPad does because you can not use the different applications the way that you can with the Apple product. This is where you have to consider what you are buying your Kindle DX for. Do you want the best device for serious reading or do you want a multifunctional gadget?

Amazon is renowned for their attention to detail and their Kindle e-readers are hands down the best for user experience and authentic readability. The major difference between the 6 inch Kindle and the DX is the price, but then the DX is designed for those who are serious about their reading and the quality of their information. Add to this the excellent Amazon support that comes with your DX and the fact that there are no other ongoing charges for your 3G connectivity and it is a very well-priced specialist reading device.

Have you thought about switching to solar energy? I mean beyond, a half hearted grumble as you are paying your electricity bill?

Have a look at these solar power facts; it might just start you thinking about a better way to get power to your home.

You see our current system for powering your toaster, TV, stereo, water heater, electric blankets and fan heater relies on using fossil fuels. These are fuels like coal and oil and, as the name suggests, these take about a million years to create. When they were first discovered they were the answer to many questions and opened up a whole new age in human development.

They are costly to mine and convert to energy. In fact these processes are also helping to destroy the very environment that created them and that we are trying to live in. But the real bad news is that they are running out. This is also causing all sorts of chaos that we don't have time to get into here.

So back to our solar power facts. These are really interesting for a number of reasons. It'll show you just how long people have been aware of this ability to harness the sun, how accessible and cost effective it is and most importantly, what the future is for solar energy.

Ok, here we go;

1 - It takes 8 minutes 19 seconds for light to travel from the sun's surface to earth.
That's 8 minutes, 19 seconds, (give or take a second) to get from the sun to your solar panel and into your system. Compare that to the hundreds of thousands of years that it takes your average barrel of oil to be created. This then needs to be mined, barreled and processed so that it becomes around 4.2 gallons of gasoline. I don't know how long that all takes. But I'm pretty sure that it can not compete with a ray from the sun.

2 – People have been aware of the power of the sun for centuries
In 1767 Swiss scientist, Horace de Saussure invented the first solar energy collector; he called it a 'hot box'. This was so useful that in the 1830s astronomer John Herschel used his 'hot box' to cook his food during a trip to Africa.

In 1921 Albert Einstein won the Nobel Prize in Physics for his research involving solar energy and photovoltaics. In fact even as far back as 1447 the great Da Vinci foresaw a place in our society for a solar industry.

3 – Solar Power is powerful enough to run the world.
Every hour there is enough sunlight hitting the earth to be able to power us for a year. In effect, if we covered a tiny bit of the Sahara desert with solar panels, we could literally give power to the whole world.

4 – It is already being used
As far back as 1990 a solar powered aircraft flew more than 4000km across the United States using nothing more than solar power. And you know all those TV and communications satellites that are floating around in space – guess what is powering them? Yup, solar panels.

5 – It is sustainable and has a bright future
Well, OK, solar energy is not strictly sustainable, the sun will run out of fuel, but scientists estimate that we have around 5 billion years to find another alternative fuel source.

In this century the demand for solar power has increased phenomenally. This has created a real need for research and the development of products and panels that can cope with the demand of our lifestyles while being available at a lower cost than original commercial systems. Governments around the world are recognizing this and offering incentives to research and development as well as subsidies for those who want to build using solar power.

It was only in 2010 that the iPad first appeared on the market and consumers went gaga over the possibilities that it presented. The ability to have all your entertainment and browsing features in one very portable tablet was just much to bear for some. But for others the iPad was the dream machine and they flocked to it like sea- gulls to fishing trawlers!

Just when you thought that technology couldn't get any more advanced, Apple has bought out the iPad 2. So what has this latest edition to the Apple stable got over its predecessor?

Well, let's start with what hasn't changed. They both have the same 9.7inch screen size and memory capabilities, but what has changed is that the iPad 2 is 33% thinner than the original. For something that was only 13.4 millimeters to start with that 5.5 mil difference is pretty cool. Apple also shaved more than 100g off the weight of the Wi-Fi and 3G version to create a tablet that is thinner, lighter but that still feels sturdy enough to use on the subway without your hands cramping up after 10 minutes.

A lot of hype has gone into the release of the iPad 2 and its increased speed and power. The reality is that unless you are into applications that require intense graphics then you probably won't notice much of a difference from the iPad. You browser will load at the same speed and you won't get your emails any sooner and both models are available with Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity.

The iPad 2 has the addition of another camera, so that you can get full-on FaceTime (the Apple version of Skype). The ability to live video conference is one that is in its infancy and has much potential for the future.

The iPad 2 comes with a range of 'smart covers'. These are a thin covers that magnetically hold onto your iPad. These covers are built to be used in many ways, fold them one way and you have a stand for your iPad, fold them another and your iPad is in a position that is easy to type from. The covers also offer some protection for your tablet and when you close the lid, your iPad 2 will shut down.

With over 70,000 iPad applications available through the Apple store they remain the leader in application availability for these electronic tablets. While there has been some suggestion in the past that some applications can not keep up with the speed of the new iPad most of these have now been updated accordingly.

Don't forget that with both the iPad and iPad 2 you can download novels from most online retailers including the Kindle store, Google books and Nook.
