Fishing For Crappie At Night With Lights

The majority of crappie fisherman fish during the day when the fishing pressure is at it's highest and most of the slab crappie are deep in cover. Now if crappie anglers would switch to crappie fishing at night they would find little fishing pressure and the big crappie are very active at night and not as wary. All you need to get started is some good to get started.

The technology for crappie night fishing has been around for quite some time and any night fisherman will tell you that you need these night fishing lights to be successful.

The reason a light fishing submersible is so successful when night fishing for crappie is because it attracts baitfish. You will amazed at the swarms of bait fish that can be attracted by one of these night fishing lights. And we all know that where there are large numbers of baitfish there will be some great crappie fishing action.

The best time to go night fishing for crappie is on hot summer nights. The temperature of the water regulates the body heat of the crappie, remember crappies are cold blooded. The crappie doesn't have a internal cooling system like we do and as result they are not active when it's hot outside, but when the water cools at night the crappie are on the move feeding.

Now if you really want to juice up your crappie night fishing party try using a Coleman lantern. Get a clamping device that will hang your lantern out over the water that can mount to your boat, dock or something along the bank if you are bank fishing for crappie. Make sure you shield the light beam so it only shines out over the water.

Now I half to tell you using Coleman lanterns is not for the light hearted. You will attract thousands of bugs to your projected light source but they will swarm near your lantern and you. Bring plenty of insect repellent and try to locate your lantern a few feet away from yourself. After setups are complete wait about 15 to 30 minutes and you should start to see small fish starting to swam around your projected light source. This is commonly called a "bait ball" You will want to fish the extreme edges of lighted surface water area using live minnows or florescent crappie jigs tipped with minnows.

If you want to increase your crappie catch you can use the combination of your two fishing light sources to your advantage. After you have positioned your lantern drop your under water fishing light as close to the center of your lanterns reflection on the surface water as possible. Just remember you still have to do some pre-planning and find a good crappie night fishing spot that is located near a know crappie habitat area.

Alot of crappie fisherman do not realize that the crappie is quite adaptable at night and can see colors at night. This gives this fish species a definite advantage over unsuspecting bait fish during the twilight hours. Bait fish can only see black and white at night and do not have the same reaction time as the crappie at night. That is why if you can attract baitfish to your surface and submerged light fishing sources you may be in for some great fishing when you go fishing for crappie at night.

It has been known for sometime that fish , shrimp, and insects are attracted to light at night, but you probably are asking yourself what color is best at night? The answer to this question is the color blue or green fishing lights because they attract both insects and the crappie.

A good coleman type lantern can be purchased for under 50$ The best lanterns will have double mantles, and use a propane canister that screws directly into the mantle holder. You can purchase lanterns at most department stores. A good quality green fishing light can be purchased online for under 200$ you want to make sure when you buy a submersible light that it has a good long cable and quality battery clamps to attach to your portable dc power source.
