Winona Refinishes and Refits Lighting for Saint Paul City Hall

Many art deco structures have disappeared in the past few decades, but the Saint Paul City Hall continues to be a tall and outstanding monument to this style of art and architecture. The building itself is designed with the streamlined and sleek lines that feature the signature style of art deco and was built using a lot of the new material such as pressed nickel-based "monel metal", plastic, and glass blocks. The interior of the City Hall is also filled with excellent examples of art deco, such as the statue God of Peace which was carved in onyx by Carl Milles in 1936.

The lighting of the building reflects its art deco roots and is designed to bring out the smooth, sleek lines of both architecture and art pieces in the City Hall. However, a lot of the light fixtures of this exceptional building have begun to suffer from wear and tear and simple aging over the years; which is no surprise, considering the Saint Paul City Hall was built in 1932. Saint Paul teamed up with Winona Lighting, a lighting developer known for delivering excellent results with custom lighting projects, to bring back the original sheen and functionality of the unique lighting system featured at the City Hall.

Winona's objectives were to replace the lamps of the light fixtures using energy efficient modern light sources, to replace missing interior and exterior parts, and to refinish the fixtures to its original glow and beauty. These historic light fixtures were carefully taken down, packed, and shipped to a Winona Lighting factory where they were fitted with fluorescent lamping and electronic ballasts. Parts were custom-made to fit the original design, such as glass disks and bronze accents.

The result was a set of brand-new looking and energy efficient light fixtures that featured the original art deco soul of the Saint Paul City Hall. The light fixtures were re-installed under the supervision of Winona Lighting technicians to ensure that everything was in order and functioning well. By working together, the city of Saint Paul and Winona Lighting helped preserve an artistic and architectural icon.
