Cancer is a scary word no matter where we might have it in our body. But, having cancer in the breast has an emotional charge like none other than, maybe, cancer that would prevent us from having children. Breast cancer detection can make us feel like our life is over, that we aren't attractive and won't be desirable anymore. Every woman understands the cold fear she has as she approaches her mammogram appointment. A breast cancer support group can help a grieving woman through the crisis of losing a breast

The breast has multiple associations for us, both men and women. In our childhood we learn that we will grow breasts like our mothers, grandmothers and aunts. There is a feeling that we are part of the tribe that grows breasts. From our earliest adolescent development we perceive it as a sign of womanhood and and the beginning of our sexual personae.

Boys in their pubescent years suddenly realize that these creatures with breasts stimulate feelings in them that they never had before. The girls with the biggest breasts are considered to be the most sexy and desirable. This never changes throughout their lives until there is the moment of breast cancer detection. Then they must adjust their perceptions amidst their fear of losing the one they love.

Many women choose to breast feed their babies which adds a whole other meaning to the understanding of the breast. Now these attractive parts of our bodies are used to give and sustain life for our helpless offspring. This is a powerful female feeling rarely known in any other area of our human experience. Just the thought that we can produce milk that will cause a tiny infant to grow chubby and healthy is a heady feeling.

If a woman were to lose her arm or leg to cancer it would be a totally different feeling than if she were to lose her breast. She must grapple with so many feeling in a very small period of time before she must bravely venture forth on to her path of healing. After the breast cancer detection through mammogram or self examination her whole perception of herself as woman is forever challenged. Even if she doesn't have to have the breast removed the emotions that she must face in that moment will forever change her life.

It is for these reasons that no one can give a woman fighting breast cancer the kind of support she needs like a woman's breast cancer support group can. Women who have never reached out to talk about their bodies or their personal life suddenly find that they crave the company of women who understand what they are going through. The support that women can give to each other can make all the difference in the struggle to win the fight against breast cancer.

When women reach out to others who understand them they can work through the emotions that can be overwhelming. If they must lose a breast to save their life they can feel loving support from others that have walked the healing path ahead of them. They can feel like they have many cheerleaders holding their hand and rooting for their victory.
