There is no greater joy for some than reading a good book to stimulate creativity and take a journey to new and exciting worlds. Each page can bring one closer to understanding difficult theoretical concepts or simply enjoying the adventure of a lifetime. Introducing today’s youth into the wonderful world of literature is vital to our nation’s continued success.

The public library can stand as the premier resource for books that will entertain and enlighten children and young adults. Unfortunately, many young people are simply not interested in visiting a stuffy library. What can teachers and parents do to encourage youth to make use of this valuable public resource?

Though typically enjoyed at county fairs and carnivals, prize wheels can help illustrate the fun and excitement that a good book can bring to even the most stubborn of student. From Harry Potter to Sherlock Holmes, the characters that fill each and every page of a book can seem just as important and real as the teachers, siblings, parents, and friends that fill that child’s life.

Unfortunately, many will never have the opportunity to enjoy these wonderful characters or the fantastic adventures they experience. Without the proper motivation, some children will feel perfectly content watching television or going to movie theaters. While there is no harm in watching a television show or movie, few can argue that these forms of passive entertainment can even begin to offer the same level of stimulation that a good book can offer.

By inserting the titles of classic works of literature and modern short stories and novels into prize wheels, librarians, teachers, and parents can encourage children to read by letting them spin the wheel. Few children would turn down an opportunity to spin the wheel, even when the prize is a suggestion on which book to read.

Alternatively, a teacher in a classroom can offer students an opportunity to spin the wheel with each book report submitted. By offering a child the chance to win healthy snacks, a homework pass, or certificate of achievement, teachers can have a tremendous impact on the lives of their students, while they encourage learning through incentives to excite the minds, emotions and, taste buds of their pupils.

Regardless of age, people generally enjoy a quick game of spin the wheel. With a little creativity and a lot of fun, anything can be accomplished through the use of a prize wheels. From encouraging children to read, to tripling sales at a department store in the third quarter, a flick of the wrist can yield much more than anyone has ever won on the television game show, The Wheel of Fortune.
