Preparing for a cruise and the essentials to pack
Once your cruise ship vacation has been booked then preparations for the trip need to start and these should not be left to the last minute.  There are a lot of things other than what luggage you are going to take with you that need looking into.  If  your planning is not detailed enough then some nasty surprises could be forthcoming which could thoroughly ruin your cruise.
As a large number of cruise ships travel to various international ports then you must make sure that you have the correct identification with you.  In most cases this will be an up to date passport but it is often advisable to take a photo driving licence with you as additional back up.  This is quite important as if you lose your passport then at least you will still have proof of who you are.
If you do not already hold a passport then it is advisable to order one at least 10 weeks before your cruise is due to leave port. If you wait until the last minute then you will possibly have to travel hundreds of miles to the nearest passport office and then you are not guaranteed a passport then if you accidentally forget your required identification.
Another problem could occur if it the first time you are going abroad and are requiring your first ever passport.  When applying for your first ever passport you will probably have to go to a local passport office for an interview.  You will be asked various questions and only when the person at the office is satisfied will you be accepted for a new passport.
Other forms of documentation that you should take are any cruise travel insurance cards and forms that you may have.  Make sure before taking out any plan that you are covered in the different countries that you are likely to visit.  Although you will be covered under most plans if you fall ill on the cruise ship, different countries have different policies and if you find your self not covered a hefty bill could come your way.
If you are taking medication then visit your doctor before you are due to go on your holiday and ask for a repeat prescription for any medication that you will be taking with you on the cruise ship.  That way if there are any delays during your vacation you can rest assured that you will have enough medication for the whole of your trip.
The other reason is that should your medication go missing then you will have the back up prescriptions to get some more.  This will give you peace of mind and ensure that you will have no worries during your time away from home. One thing to remember though is to ask your doctor about taking your medicine when on a cruise ship in the ocean.  Your doctor may be able to recommend something else that may be more suitable to take and be easier on your stomach.
Failing to plan could not only cause you huge problems whilst away but in some cases you may get left behind as some cruise ship companies will not refund your money if an error on your behalf has happened.  If you get these basics right then there should be no nasty surprises, illnesses or big medical bills which could totally ruin your vacation of a lifetime.
