So what is the best kind of
pest control equipment? In the endless war against pests, the march of technology has thrown up one weapon in particular that has turned the balance in our favor,
ultrasonic pest control.
Ultrasonic sound or Ultrasound is the name given to the frequencies of sound wave that are outside the range which a human can hear. Because pests like small rodents hear up to a much, much higher top frequency than humans, sounds can be made in these frequencies that only the rodents will hear.
You don't need to worry about your cat or your dog, because although you know they hear higher sounds than you, their limit is also way below the 'rodent frequencies'. If you keep a guinea-pig or a gerbil then you might want to consider a different method of pest control.
Ultrasonic pest control devices consist of a frequency generator and a transmitter and often there will be some sort of directional control (works like a bullhorn) to allow you to concentrate the signal where it is needed. Some systems use more than one transmitter to cover the area more consistently, but you have to be careful to use a system that is designed for this. Just buying two of the same unit can cause interference problems between them in certain cases.
Ultrasound, like audible sound, has a tendency to remain within a room, so with careful positioning, and careful control of the signal strength, you can make a pest-free bubble in your home.
The way it works is that the pests hear the ultrasound signal something like a loud and painful screech. It gets stronger as you approach the device, and weaker as you get further away, so the pests in the affected area will move away from your home and avoid it at all costs. The effect is permanent, so long as the device stays on, it is not something the pests ever get used to and learn to ignore.
Pests that are susceptible to ultrasonic pest control devices are not limited to rodents. Mosquitoes are very effectively controlled by this technology. Cockroaches, woodlice and ants are not quite so quick to move, but they don't like ultrasound and will gradually creep away from your protected areas.
The best thing about this type of pest control equipment is that it is non-lethal. It uses no dangerous poisons or vicious traps, and even if you don't mind killing the odd rodent or two, anyone who has ever had a dead rat stuck inside a wall will tell you that if the rat had just left without dying, life would smell a lot better for everyone.
There is no danger to kids or pets or adults for that matter, and if your house stays clear of pests there can be no better tool.
