Internet Games Spell The End Of The Console

Internet Games Spell The End Of The Console
The gaming industry, especially the console market has for years been a multibillion dollar business, but how is the colossal influx of internet games affecting the offline gaming market, and could their skyrocketing rise in popularity spell the end of the home based console?

Remember years ago how excited you were at Christmas unwrapping your brand new Nintendo NES system? The anticipation of plugging the console in and loading up the hottest new game was almost unbearable. Those were the days when visiting the local game shop to choose a new game for your birthday was an event attended by the whole family, and friends would clamor for a turn of Mario and Donkey Kong.

Times have definitely changed. The huge success of the internet and the growth of the online recreation market have brought with it a new era of games. Since their online introduction, the internet games industry has exploded with millions of players flocking to the hundreds of different games sites in cyber space.

There are several features that have made online gaming so successful, and one of them is the sheer number of different games available. There are literally hundreds of thousands of titles available in a huge range of genres. Whether you like shoot em ups, sports simulators, puzzle games, or even cooking games, there will be something to keep you amused. The other immense attraction is that many gaming sites offer their games for absolutely free.

Something else this new generation of gamers love about internet games is the social aspect involved. It is now possible to play games with people on the other side of the world! Imagine yourself playing Scrabble with your Aunty in Australia, or playing Doom with a friend you've made in Germany. There is a real community feel between gamers worldwide which is something the old style consoles never presented before.

This social and online aspect of gaming has proved so popular that the offline platforms now offer online capabilities. You can now connect your Xbox or PlayStation to the Internet and enjoy the same social benefits as those playing games on their PCs. The console manufacturing companies willingness to adapt only proves that internet games are a real threat to the survival of their business.

Gamers expect much more than the outdated consoles could offer even though they've incorporated the same genres of games like cooking games etc. So now a system that cannot allow you to engage in games online, communicate with people around the world in real time, and let you download and watch movies simply won't sell.

As consumers spend more time dedicated to online recreation, gaming companies are beginning to place more emphasis on the development of a whole range of new and exciting games in a variety of niches. In fact in the world of free online games, it is actually the more obscure niches that are proving the most popular among gamers.

Cooking games surprisingly do very well, as do virtual pet games where you must train and care for an animal of your choosing. One thing is for certain, regardless of whether we're playing via consoles or free internet games, the computer gaming niche is going to remain a multibillion dollar industry throughout the foreseeable future.
