How to Get Motivated

It's very easy to set goals for ourselves; to say we are going to lose weight, or to plan on starting a business. The hard part is putting our plans to action. I believe that the most common reason for that is because most people seek instant gratification. Many of us need to see results or rewards for our efforts quickly; otherwise we tend to lose interest. There are other reasons too of course, such as the three listed by Vic Johnson in his book titled "52 Mondays". Johnson says three common reasons people don't get started is: 1) They don't know how or where to start, 2) they think the work will be too difficult, or 3) they simply believe that they cannot do it.Here's the good news. There are things that you can do to overcome these obstacles and get motivated. For the instant gratification seeker, Johnson recommends getting yourself a 12 month paper calendar. The reason it should be paper is so you can hang it somewhere in plain sight. Then you will need to schedule a reasonable deadline in which you believe your goal(s) can be and should be achieved. Next, you will need to break the goal down into monthly or even weekly bench marks. For example, let's say your goal is to lose 100 pounds and you have allotted yourself a year for the accomplishment. You can break that goal into 52 weeks, which would then give you a bench mark goal of 2 pounds per week. If you meet your weekly goal, you should reward yourself with something small that you can enjoy. Brian Tracy, in his book "The Psychology of Achievement", gives a good example of short term rewarding. Let's say yours sitting at your desk staring at a blank screen or the telephone. You either need to write a letter or make some phone calls. In this situation you would buy yourself a good cup of coffee. For every line your write, or phone call you make, you'd allow yourself a sip of it. Small things like this do actually work because your subconscious mind begins to attach positive consequences for your efforts. In the long run, self-motivation will come naturally.Now let's move on to the next obstacle: You don't know how or where to start. Johnson says that the first phase of any goal should be "the research phase". Find a mentor, a forum, a group, or any form of local or online community that centers on the one thing you are trying to achieve. The best thing you can do is find someone who has already succeeded. You can study that person and discover what they had to go through and how they did it. Once you've done your research then you can move on to the second phase which is to map out a plan of action. I'll go over action planning in a different article.This brings us to the last two obstacles: "I can't do it" or "the workis too hard". This stems from a bad habit of negative thinking. It is our thoughts that generate feelings, and our feelings that generate actions, so ultimately it's our thought process that needs alteration. We can alter our thought process by telling ourselves that we are capable and that we can achieve anything we set our minds to. This is not an easy process, as we are creatures of habit and habits are hard to break! But Aristotle says we are what do on a repeated basis. So, just change what you tell yourself repeatedly and eventually everything else will follow. To help with this process, I highly suggest listening to positive affirmations twice a day- once in the morning before starting your day, and once again in the evening before you fall asleep. I am going to leave a link and the end of this article to a "positive affirmations" audio. Eventually, as good habits began replacing the old ones, you can cut down the affirmation sessions to just once in morning.Well there you have it! No more excuses! Just remember, the hardest part is to get the ball in motion. If you give yourself a hard enough push in the beginning, then you will get enough momentum to keep it rolling.
