People usually measure their car's tires' health based on common-sense parameters like if they're safe from blowouts, if they can give enough traction in rain or snow, or if they can still deal with potholes and other usual road hazards. One of these parameters is the service life of the tires or how long they'll last before you spend more money to replace them.

If you've already had to replace your tires, then you might already know that they don't wear out at the same rate. Most of the time, you'll need to replace the front tires before the rear tires on a typical front-wheel drive vehicle.  That's because they carries about 60% of the load and they're responsible for most of the steering as well as 80% of the braking.

By rotating the tires, you are making sure that they wear out more evenly and you're helping them last longer too. A lot of car manufacturer's recommend tire rotation at every oil change, but others may recommend a different interval (check your manual to be sure). The front tires should be moved to the opposite sides of the rear (front-right tire will be moved to the rear-left position, front-left tire will be moved to the rear-right position) while the rear tires are simply moved forward.

Car rotation is something that you can do yourself but an auto repair specialist can help if you need assistance. If you're using an air-powered impact wrench, don't use it to tighten the nuts or bolts because they'll be too tight making them difficult to remove when, say, you get a flat tire. Also, a lot of cars have tires that have 'differential tire pressures' which means that the rear tires and front tires will not have the same air pressure levels. When rotating them, you will need to adjust the pressure of the tires to the correct levels (refer to your manual for the correct tire pressure).

By rotating your tires regularly, you can save money and prevent accidents from happening too. It's also something that you can do by yourself easily, but you can always ask a reliable repair specialist for help if needed.
