Surprisingly, most business owners won't even need to hire a landscaper to do the job if they want to invest in a little do-it-yourself elbow grease. Sod installation can be completed relatively easily with very little instruction. Moreover, you can have huge savings by going directly to a sod farmer and picking up the sod yourself.

The key to planning a comfortable outdoor area is finding the right sod. If you don't have a specific species in mind, you may want to find a sod that works well in a broad array of applications. Meyers Zoysia sod, for example, offers good tolerance to frost and shade and requires little maintenance. Most find it attractive, too. It has a medium blade with a medium dark green color. It's not perfect, though. It is not ideal for every application. Like other grasses, Meyers Zoysia sod will not thrive in heavy shade or a drought. Zeon Zoysia might be a better choice for these applications. Each grass type has been hybridized to include unique features of tolerances. Your local sod farmer can tell you which type of grass is ideal for your project.

After you decide on the perfect sod, consider installing a sprinkler system. It isn't necessary for a healthy lawn but can help extend the life of your sod by keeping it properly watered. Sod is an investment in your outdoor quality of life. A sprinkler system will help protect that investment. If you decide not to invest in a sprinkler system, simply make a watering schedule and stick to it. In the first month, you'll need to ensure the sod has plenty of water so that it can take root. Once it has taken root, regular watering won't be required.

Whether it is a commercial property or your backyard, maintenance is the most important factor to consider when creating an attractive outdoor area. Choose a sod variety that is low maintenance if you don't anticipate having the time for regular trimming. If you have your heart set on Zoysia sod, you're in luck. Most of the Zoysia varieties are low maintenance and very resilient. Alternatively, a variety like Bermuda grass has much higher requirements for mowing, sun and water.
