Attracting bait fish to your night fishing location is very important. I have had my best success at night using quality submersible light for fishing. This technology has been around for years but very few fisherman use it. If you use a quality underwater light for fishing you will be surprised at how many bait fish you will attract near your night fishing setup.
Just submerging a fishing light anywhere won't catch you any fish. You still have to do some pre-planning for the type of fish species you plan on targeting for the night. You will still need to find a likely habitat area. Underwater fishing lights have worked best for me when I find an area with little current.
I usually try to set up near areas where I have seen the type of bait fish that the fish I want to target like to eat. Usually a good habitat area for any species of fish will be near a easy food source.
One very important reason many game fish like to feed at night is because they have a distinct advantage over there prey at night. When you attract bait fish to your submerged fishing lighting source game fish will sit right outside on the edges of the light source beam and wait for unsuspecting bait fish to come by.
The bait fish cannot react as quickly as the game fish at night and are an easy meal for many species of fish at night, particularly the species that have good eye sight and smell, crappie, walleye and catfish.
The reason Game fish have an advantage ,is because most of them can detect color at night. When fish can detect color at night they are able to detect light intensity and color contrast changes.
It has been known for sometime that fish, shrimp, and insects are attracted to light at night. But you probably are asking yourself what color is best at night if you are looking to purchase a submersible fishing light
? The answer to this question is the color blue or green because they attract both the food chain and the game fish.
There are two types of commercial underwater lighting that you can purchase, but we will not discuss the land based systems used primarily at boat docks. We will concentrate on portable dc powered submersible lights used for fishing. When you go to purchase one of these lights here is what to look for in priority order.
1 High Intensity
2 Blue & Green lighting
3 Powered by a DC battery, and must be portable
4 Has long cables and good battery attachments to submerge to different
5 Durable And Waterproof at different depths.
You probably won't find a good florescent submersible for light fishing at the local department stores. Some bait shops may carry them, but the best place to look is online. Do not purchase lights that do not emit less then 1 thousand lumens and are less than 25 watts. I wouldn't recommend getting a light that doesn't meet this criteria.
Because of the power usage limitations of halogen and incandescent light sources, I recommend you narrow your search for a good portable underwater fishing light to florescent types, because there power consumption is a 10th of the power used by the other light sources.
When comparing prices you need to look for the following specifications. The best florescent submersibles use 25-40watts of power, and they emit 1000 to 3000 lumens per tube.
Remember from above, intensity of the light and color are key factors in attraction both the game fish and the "food chain" so look for these key elements when comparing pricing.
The best underwater fishing florescent light units both blue and green, range in cost between 160$ to 200$ and go down from there, keep in mind,in most cases the cheaper the cost the lower the quality, and further you will be from the 1000 to 3000 lumens intensity.
To end our article today we would like to emphasize that it is very important to compare different manufactures and suppliers of underwater fishing lights
. You more or less need to get the best bang for your buck. Remember be careful because cheaper doesn't necessarily get you quality night fishing lights.
