There are three great tricks that are often used to digitally edit and improve a photo. Regardless of the challenges a particular photo may present, the following techniques can ameliorate most issues.
Brightness/Contrast adjustments. With photos taken in natural light, there are sure to be areas of both under and over exposure. This is not a problem in Photoshop. A few clicks of the mouse and you can turn a decent photo into a great one. When you adjust the brightness and contrast of an entire photo, however, particularly dark areas can become solid black. It is better to adjust smaller sections than the entire picture. Just use the lasso tool to select the area and proceed with caution.
Levels.These are actually quite similar to the brightness/contrast sliders but, instead of altering the image directly, light or shadow in pulled into outputs and inputs. Levels are a great way to add dynamic contrast to a picture while eliminating gray or dull areas. It is probably the most popular technique among experts.
The curve tool is one of the most powerful tools in Photoshop. With it, you can adjust brightness and contrast, dynamic quality, and richness with the click of a mouse. There are actually two ways you can do this.
You can graph it. When you use the graph, you simply put points on a graph and pull to adjust your image.
Light and dark eye droppers. The more popular of the two methods, this one allows you to adjust your photo with a few clicks. All you have to do is select the dark eye dropper and click on the darkest area of your photo, select the light eye dropper and click on the brightest area of your photo, and click ok.
