Engaging your blog readers into a conversation is one of the most critical aspects to successful blogging. When you build up a community, you need to get people involved. This is the only way to really pull in the full power that your blog can wield.
Mastering a blog is more difficult than a static website. When you build a website, you will probably rely on the one time visits. You try to pull people in, and build up the one time sales. Your goal is to funnel people into a sale, and maybe come back again later.
However, with a blog, your goal is to build a following. You want people to come back and see what you have to say. The best way to do this is by learning to start a conversation
with your blog. You need to write your posts in a way that draws your readers into the conversation. Once you engage them, you will find that you learn as much as your readers do.
In order to start up a conversation, you need to make sure every post is well researched, and well written. You have to show that you know what you are talking about. You will find hundreds of blogs with half baked information, and it is obvious they don't really know what they are saying. Furthermore, when you learn to write conversationally, you will build up a better reputation along the way.
Another advantage you get when you start a conversation with your blog is new ideas for later posts. Often, someone will post a question that get's your brain churning. By joining in this conversation, you can give a brief answer, and mention that you are working on a more detailed post covering that question. When you do this, you are going to help them in the short term, while at the same time, encouraging them to come back later for the full explanation.
Your blog readers will be more willing to open up if you are honest with them. Don't be an expert when you are not, and take the time to talk to them from your own experiences. It can be difficult to tell your personal story, but when you do, people will be compelled to share their own experiences. it works like magic.
As you expand your blog, and you build up a regular fan base, you will find starting a conversation gets easier. You will find people coming in to comment, and engage you in a discussion on your favorite topic. The most important thing here is to not give up. Keep trying, and you will get a conversation started with your readers.
