Crappie Fishing At Night With Lights
Crappie Fishing At Night Lights

Little known to most crappie anglers is the fact that crappie are very active at night, and if you have good a night fishing for crappie trip can be quite amazing.

Any die hard crappie night fishing fisherman will tell you that underwater fishing light technology has been around for years, yes The technology for these submerged light fishing has improved, but all the basics of night fishing are still used.

Underwater fishing lights plain and simple attract bait fish, and we all know that bait fish attract the crappie. You will increase your catch 10 fold by using a fishing light so you can have a very a enjoyable and productive night fishing for crappie trip.

Crappies are a cold blooded fish species and do not have a way too cool their bodies down so during hot summer days they will not be very active. But when the sun goes down during the hot summer months the water will cool and crappies will be out cruising looking for a meal. So in the heat of the summer is a great time to go crappie fishing at night.

Now I am going to recommend something that could be a bit uncomfortable. Attach a Coleman lantern, that you can clamp to the side of your boat, or hang your lantern on a pole if you are bank fishing for crappie at night and have some type of shield wrapped around your lantern that will project the light out on to the surface of the water.

Now I half to tell you using Coleman lanterns is not for the light hearted. You will attract thousands of bugs to your projected light source but they will swarm near your lantern and you. Bring plenty of insect repellent and try to locate your lantern a few feet away from yourself. After setups are complete wait about 15 to 30 minutes and you should start to see small fish starting to swam around your projected light source. This is commonly called a"bait ball" You will want to fish the extreme edges of lighted surface water area using live minnows or florescent crappie jigs tipped with minnows.

If you want to increase your crappie catch you can use the combination of your two fishing light sources to your advantage. After you have positioned your lantern drop your under water fishing light as close to the center of your lantern's reflection on the surface water as possible. Just remember you still have to do some pre-planning and find a good crappie night fishing spot that is located near a know crappie habitat area.

Crappie have a distinct advantage over the bait fish at night because of their keen color vision at night. Most bait fish cannot detect color at night and do not move or react as quickly as the crappie or other game fish can at night. The crappie can wait patiently just outside the beam of your submerged light fishing and attack the bait fish and feed at will because the bait fish cannot react quickly enough the escape from the crappie.

It has been known for sometime that fish , shrimp, and insects are attracted to light at night, but you probably are asking yourself what color is best at night? The answer to this question is the color blue or green fishing lights because they attract both insects and the crappie.

A good propane lanterns are easy to find and purchase in most department stores for under 50$. Make sure you buy one that has a double mantle for more illumination power. You can find quality submersible fishing lights on the internet for under 200$ Good submersible green fishing lights should include long power cables so you can suspend you fishing light at different depths. The light should also have quality battery clamps to attach to 12 volt battery such as a car battery.

Well folks Its been great ! Just a note before we end our article. if you are going to purchase a underwater fishing light for night fishing for crappie do some research, the lowest price is not always the best. Wish you luck on your next fishing trip!
