Choosing the Right Oil for Your Car
Choosing the Right Oil for Your Car Author: David Clarke
While just about every driver knows that making sure a car has enough oil is important, not everyone knows how to choose the right kind of oil for their car. Most people just use the same car oil that their dads used, and the ads that we see on car oil these days just add to the confusion. Having the right kind of oil for your car is essential in making sure that it stays in tip-top shape. Oil keeps your different engine parts lubricated, cools moving parts and helps keep them clean. The right kind of motor oil gets the job done better and faster and protects your engine from damage.

There are a lot of differences among motor oils and choosing the right one can have a lot of effect on how well your car runs, but choosing the right oil doesn't have to be hard. You can start by asking yourself the following questions:

1.What kind of motor oil does your owner's manual recommend?

The manufacturer knows what kind of oil goes well with the vehicles that they make. When choosing motor oil for your car, be sure to check out the recommended motor oil in your owner's manual. For new cars, using the wrong kind of oil can even invalidates the warranty.

2.Does the oil that you're currently using have a starburst symbol on the packaging?

When choosing motor oil, it's best to go with the ones that have a starburst symbol which indicates that it has been tested to meet the standards of the API (American Petroleum Institute).

3.What is the viscosity of the oil that you're using?

You need to choose the viscosity of motor oil based on what kind of climate you drive your car in. Oil thins as it heats and thickens as it cools so as a rule of thumb, you're going to want oil with high viscosity if you plan on driving in hot areas and thin oil if you live in colder climates.
If the oil is too thick, turning on the engine will be more difficult and less fuel efficient. There are multi-weight types of motor oil that can cover a range of temperatures if you live in an area where sharp changes in the weather are common. It's best to consult a viscosity chart when making your choice.

4.Do you need additives?

Using additives with your motor oil can help maintain and even improve good oil performance by assisting in lubrication, minimizing sludge, minimizing varnish and protecting your car from damage. However, keep in mind that in the case of oil additives, more is not always better. Matching the right kind of additives to your car's needs and your oil's performance is essential for getting a positive result.
