Buy Local Sod for Best Quality
For those of you in the real estate business, you are likely already well aware that lush, Georgia grass sod can raise property values, improve the chances of a home selling, and most importantly, create an appearance of beauty in any neighborhood. There is no question about it that beauty and elegance can be added to a homes appeal simply planting new sod. Why sod? Seed requires very specific environmental conditions to fully establish a developed root system. Sod can be laid in just a few hours and be fully functional in less than a month.

When you set out to buy sod, you should probably do your homework. If you are buying sod for your Georgia home from an out of state distributor, you are wasting your money. To understand why, consider the process involved in harvesting a roll of sod. Years of careful farming finally culminate in an almost savage coming of age ceremony. Specialized equipment slices through the earth just under the root system, pulling lush grass sod from mother earth. After separated from its life source, grass can only survive a short time before drying out and eventually dying. Needless to say, the heat drenched, long journey from out of state locations can severely dehydrate the newly cut grass and damage the root system.

Sod purchased from a Georgia farmer, however, is typically cut when an order is placed. This minimizes the risk that you will receive damaged or dried grass. Any landscaper can tell you the difference between locally grown and out of state grown grass. Out of state cultivated grass is usually dry, damaged, and often suffers from transplant shock. Because locally grass sod is grown in soil very similar in composition to the soil in your front yard, the chance of transplant shock is very minimal. If you do not want to waste your money, buy from a local sod farmer who knows the kinds of grass that will be perfect for your landscape.

If you have not decided on a variety of sod yet, you might want to take growth rate and shade tolerance into consideration. As enjoyable as mowing the front lawn can be, sometimes homeowners just do not have a lot of time to spare. Rather than letting the grass sod grow and sacrificing the well manicured appearance that you love, just look for a sod that has a slow to medium vertical growth rate. Instead of cutting your grass twice a week during the summer, you might only have to give it a trim once or twice a month. When trees provide a lot of shade coverage in your yard, be sure to find a shade tolerant grass variety. Some species of grass require full sun, others can prosper in even the most dense shade conditions. Do some research on the different varieties of sod or simply call your local sod farmer. The sod farm customer service department should be able to help you decide what is best for your landscape.
