It also helps establish mutual respect and improves communication. This leads to increased overall productivity.

Rather than investing in a retreat, consider getting a prize wheel. Prize wheels have long been known to create a fun atmosphere. They are often used successfully at trade show events or company meetings to create buzz and generate interest. What many do not realize, though, is that these carnival games are the perfect choice for team building exercises, too. Once you have selected a few activities and inserted them into the wedges around the prize wheel, you can get started.

Outdoor Team Building Exercise

If your company has a large parking lot, simply buy a prize wheel, customize the prize slots, and bring all the employees outside. Organize your employees into several teams and challenge them with activities that require them to fully cooperate. A scavenger hunt is a great team building activity. When a team finds everything on the list, they get to spin the wheel to win a prize. Make sure you offer great prizes. A cash bonus or a laptop computer can be a powerful motivator. With a free template, it is really easy to customize a prize wheel. Create prize cards for team activities and have the employees spin to select an activity. While the teams are engaged in their activities, simply insert the winning prize cards. Once everyone is finished with their activity, they can spin the wheel for a chance to win a prize.

"Back to Back drawing" is a great team building exercise that illustrates the importance of clear communication. For this activity, employees are divided into pairs and sit back to back. One partner will be given a picture filled with geometric shapes and outlines, the other a pencil and paper. Then, the one with the picture will give their partner step by step instructions to draw the picture. The one drawing the picture must rely solely on their partner's instructions. They are not allowed to see the picture being described. The team that successfully draws the picture can spin the wheel to win a prize. You can even use your prize wheel to start a group discussion. It is a great tool to use to improve communication at the workplace. Here are some discussion ideas that can be placed on prize wheels:

• What were the feelings that you felt when you were the person describing the picture to your partner? Do you know why you felt this way?
• What were the feelings that you felt when you were the person trying to draw the picture from your partner's description? What made you feel this way?
• How do you think this applies to communicating with others?
• What can you do to communicate more effectively?
