We discussed basic SEO
dealing with keywords. Now it is time to look at the most important part of SEO, backlinks. A backlink is a link on another website that links back to your website. There is a special HTML cod that makes your keyword or phrase become hyper linked.
The code is easy. This is the code keyword. Put your website address where it says website, be sure to leave the quotation marks. Both keywords should be the same. The second keyword between the > < will appear on the website (this is sometimes called an anchor text. When someone clicks on this part, they are sent to your website.
It also best when you are building backlinks (adding backlinks to your website) to use deep links. This is a link to a specific blog post or page. So, your website address will look like this: http://www.website.com/blog_title. This is more powerful than just linking back to your main website.
Why is this an important part of basic SEO
? All the search engines have bots (sometimes called spiders) that crawl around the internet looking for content. Each time the bot comes to backlink it goes to the link and associates the website with the keyword. So each backlink is like a vote for your website. So the more backlinks you have to your website the better.
A good example of this is to search for click here. The #1 spot on Google is Adobe. This is from so many other websites that are linked back to Adobe reader with the keywoard "click here". This is from so many other websites linking to Adobe Reader's website to download this program.
There are many ways to get backlinks to your website. You have article directories, social bookmarking, link directories, forums, and videos. Each of these deserves their own blog post and maybe more. Due to the length here I will briefly discuss what these are.
Article directories are just that, they allow people to post their own articles and most do allow backlinks to your website. Usually in the resource box at the bottom of the article you will put your backlinks. This is where you can put a descriptive keyword along with your backlinks. Each article directory has different rules, and some are better than others.
My favorite and the best is Article Productions, because there are no ads competing with my articles like many other article directories.
Many forums or message boards do allow you to include your links in a signature that goes under your post. Although each has different rules, most will allow you to put backlinks here. You should be participating in each, not just posting to get a backlink (also known as spamming).
Some examples of social bookmarking sites are Digg, Reddit, Stumble Upon, and many others. There are thousands of these sites, and many of the smaller ones are here one day and gone the next. These sites allow you put links to your website. Be sure to include your keywords in the title and description on these websites.
Link directories are very similar to social bookmarking, but they have a person or group that approves of all links. So, you submit your link, and it may take weeks to see if they approve your link to include on their websites. Some of these you do have to pay for each link (sometimes around $5-$10 per link).
Furthermore, many video websites allow you put a link to your website in the description. Be sure to have your keyword in the title of the video and put your link in the description.
These are some ways you can start building backlinks. I know it is a lot to do these manually. I will show you some tools you can use to make this not as laborious.
There is much more to backlinks and backlinking, but I am just keeping this about basic SEO
to help you increase your ranking in the search engines.
