Back to School for Making Relationships Work
Today, I want you to take a journey back in time. Think back  to your very first day in kindergarten. You probably don't know anyone. You are a little nervous, and you are scared to death of what is to come.
As you sit there, the teacher enters the room. She introduces herself and calls your attention to the blackboard. Now, she tells you to start writing a 5 page report on the Charles Dickens classic "Oliver Twist."

rel1    Before you have a chance at making relationships work, you have to be well grounded in the basics. Think about your first day in kindergarten class for just a few minutes. When your teacher started class, did she tell you to do a 5 page report? You were probably told to do a full report on

Wait Just a Minute....

That can't be right. After all, we are talking about kindergarten class here. You would not jump right into writing book reports. Heck, you probably don't even know how to read. However, this is exactly what people do with their relationships. They jump right into the middle of complex relationship without working on the basic fundamentals. How can you expect to succeed like that?

Take things back a little. She would probably have you start with the letter A. You spend a little time learning how to write the letter A and associating the different sounds that represent that letter. You would then continue through the entire alphabet learning how to write all your letters. Eventually you get so used to those basics that you practice them every time you write without even thinking about it. The same can be true about learning how to have a strong relationship. It is a struggle at first to get it right, but once you get used to it, you will practice these fundamentals without even thinking about it.

Unfortunately, nobody in school is teaching these basic fundamentals in how to have relationships with people. Most people have to figure it out for themselves. Don't freak out, there are people here to help you do just that.
You need to take it slow, and get to know each other. Don't assume that you know anything, or that your partner does either. You need to learn how to build strong communication, and how to keep the fires of passion burning brightly for years to come.  You need to learn the keys that make love last through the ages.
