2012 End of the World - Are You Ready?
Did you see the movie 2012, end of the world
? I did. It was very unsettling for me. Yet, I didn't give it a lot of credence. Nothing of that magnitude could happen here. That is what went through my mind, until the world saw all the images of the Haitian earthquake. Shortly after that catastrophe an earthquake greater than 8.0 magnitude devastated coastal towns followed by a tsunami in Chile.
Can you imagine the turmoil and chaos that would follow a nationwide loss of power. You might think that it can't happen here. It already has. In 1859 the Sun's solar storms peaked and sent electromagnetic radiation that disabled this nation's telegraph network. That was 1859.
By today's standards the telegraph network then was primitive. Unlike today, there are over 180,000 miles of high voltage transmission cable in the United States. That is not counting the network of local transmission lines.
"During previous solar storm cycles, operators found some metallic power equipment glowing red hot," that is what NEMA (National Electric Manufacturers Association) writes on their blog. They warn that repair and replacement of the national grid would take years.
You may not be alarmed, but scientists are forecasting solar storms 30% to 50% greater than the last solar storm. This is not some New Age or end-of-the-world
soothsayer prediction. This is a forecast based on hard data. When is this solar storm going to happen? Yes, in 2012.
2012 may or may nor happen. Regardless, major catastrophes
are always possible and I want to be ready as best I can. You can't prepare for everything, and you do not want to live your life in constant fear.
In any case, we should all be prepared with a basic plan of action and some basic stores. Floods, earthquakes, and floods can happen
